I seriously cannot believe how fast time has flown by. It’s definitely been a jam-packed semester filled with fun and crazy events! Now that the semester is pretty much over I thought it would be a great idea to share with all of you some of the successes of our events thus far. I’ve asked the co-chairs to give a few of their key highlights from what they’ve done this semester.
Frosh
Co-Chairs: Jean-Paul Pilon Briggs and Elizabeth Rondon
- Strong group of Frosh leaders (the best yet!)
- Reached our maximum capacity of 475 students
- Highest sponsorship amount compared to previous years ($16,000)
- Positive student feedback from events such as Beach Day and Power Hour
- Vision of Frosh couldn’t have been realized without the strength of staff, leaders and participants
- Frosh committee was strong, passionate and without their hard work Frosh would have not been the success that it was
A comment from Liz Rondon: “It was a privilege and a massive help to work with someone like J.P who had planned Frosh in the past as well as a wonderful and opinionated committee who challenged each other as well as me. I think that directly translated into the event being the success it was despite all the obstacles.”
4a7
Co-Chairs: Chase Potter and Marlee Brillinger
- Started the year off with a big bang (The Avicii Edition)
- Substantial turnout week over week
- Hype Week 4a7 was a huge success with the highest sales revenue in recent memory (over 60 cases sold!)
- Moving beyond the point of breaking even and continuing the tradition of 4a7 prices, despite rising costs
A comment from the co-chairs: “We look forward to seeing all those new faces when we return for more 4a7s in the winter semester, watch out for some exciting new promotions!”
CASCO
Co-Chairs: Dahlia Lam and Eric Elofsson
- Attendance was above expected with 266 people coming out to the show and silent auction
- Over $5,000 was raised from ticket sales and $1,600 from the silent auction alone
- CASCO’s goal this year is to donate just over $15,000 to the Montreal Children’s Hospital
- Recently informed by the Montreal Children's Hospital Foundation that an Examination room will be named after CASCO McGill due to our over 220,000 worth of donations over the past 10 years
A comment from the co-chairs: “Thank you to all the committee members, dancers, sponsors, and audience members that helped make CASCO a huge success”
HYPE WEEK/CARNIVAL
Co-Chairs: Jean-Paul Pilon Briggs and Bamber Sunell
- Biggest (and best) hype week ever with over 900 participants
- 21 teams, 7 of which were first year teams (highest first year participation ever!)
- Baywatch Debauch- engaging theme!
- 5 unbelievable nights with a great mix of traditional staple events (beer olympics, boat races, power hour) with new events (beach party, swimsuit competition)
- Received very strong student feedback
- Very attractive co-chairs
A comment from the co-chairs: “Carnival is coming…”
CANCER AUCTION
Co-Chairs: Sarah Burrows and Laura Miller
- Managed to raise just under $2,000 so far, simply by holding bakesales and raffles - most notably raising just over $700 during Hype Week!
- We have had lots of luck in finding items for the auction in January (Think: Michael Kors, Tiffany's, plane tickets, a signed Habs jersey, an abundance of restaurant vouchers, ...)
- Planning a hockey night to be held at Gert’s in February (after the actual Auction)
A comment from the co-chairs: "We are really happy with the effort that committee has been putting into the auction – regardless if it’s tabling for a few extra hours or bringing in a large donation – it just makes doing work for the auction that much better knowing that everyone cares for what we are doing”
P[H]ASSION
Co-Chairs: Jaymie Lundrigan and Laura Galin
- Novel idea to host a Battle of the Bands event – nothing has been done like that before!
- Four bands competing and one feature performance by Mad June
- Raised about $800 from Battle of the Bands and bake sales
- For next semester: a campus wide photography campaign to raise awareness for HIV/AIDS, a second hype party, and the final fashion show
A comment from the co-chairs: “We are really happy with the new direction p[h]assion is taking this year and can’t wait to continue working towards our final show!”
DESAUTELS BALL
Co-Chairs: Patricia Lohmus and Guillaume Drouin Garneau
- In case you don’t already know the Desautels Ball is a dinner and dance at the end of the academic year which brings over 250 graduates along with their friends to celebrate their graduation from the Desautels Faculty of Management
- NEW idea this year: looking to take the graduating class to the scenic Mont Tremblant for a 1 or 2 night stay! More information to come next semester
A comment from the co-chairs: “We are very excited to give students their one last chance to spend an evening with friends before moving on to future endeavors in such a superb location. We know it will be a night to remember …”
Going through this blog really shows all the wonderful and fun things that are happening in the Desautels Faculty of Management and I feel very honored to be leading the engagement portfolio this year. Just to conclude, I could not be more proud of all the co-chairs and committees for all their hard work this past semester. They have all truly done amazingly and I am certain that this will carry on for the rest of the school year.
Great job to all of you!
Your VP Engagement,
Marie Louise Schmidt
