Student Right of the Week

Posted by Matthew Reid on Sun, 02/12/2012 - 04:15

Hi everyone,

Here's your Student Right of the Week (Article 26):

  1. Every group of students has a right to organize and to promote the interests of its members, provided that the purposes of such group are lawful. Every such group shall also have the right to publicize
and hold meetings, to debate any matter and to engage in lawful demonstration.

Noting the current events still taking place at the James Administration Building, this right is particularly pertinent. Though some have called the legality of the students' actions into question, they are still successfully occupying, which means the administration has not found legal precedent to remove them by force. Hopefully this matter is resolved swiftly, legally, and without anyone getting hurt.

Student Right of the Week

Here is this week's Student Right of the Week (Article 19 of the McGill Charter of Student's Rights)!

  1. "Every student has a right to the due and explicit acknowledgement of any indebtedness owed to him or her by a member of the University for research or assistance in the preparation of an academic work."

This right as stated protects students working as TA's or Research Assistants (or other research coordinating roles) from not receiving their "due" recognition should the professor publish an article or make a breakthrough of significance in the given field of study. Whenever such a breakthrough is made, it is easy for those responsible for the work that made breakthrough possible to get lost in the hype and awe of the moment. This should never be the case, and article 19 prevents such practice from becoming standard at McGill and hopefully at many other fine academic research intensive institutions.

Welcome to 2012!

Welcome Back All!

The first few weeks of school have been absolutely nuts - between JDC, Carnival, and DBCS, the weeks have sure flown by!

I have some big congrats to throw out! Our JDC team kicked serious butt this year and brought home 7 podiums - the best to date! Secondly, congratulations to Marie-Louise, our VP Engagement for an extremely successful Carnival. If you see Co-Chairs, J.P. Briggs or Alexander (Bamber) Sunell roaming the halls of Bronfman, be sure to give them a big thank-you! These boys and their team spent countless hours ensuring that Carnival 2012 was an absolute success. Also, congrats Sarah Burrows and Laura Miller who put on a fantastic Cancer Auction - the committee was able to raise almost $20,000! A truly outstanding accomplishment!

This past week I also had the privilege of hearing Craig Keilburger speak about his Free the Children and Me to We initiatives at the Desautels Business Conference on Sustainability. Not only is he an amazing speaker, but his story is even more inspirational. To catch a glimpse of what I am talking about, check out one of his speeches: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FJcAaekWgqY.

This semester is sure to bring some more amazing events for BCom students. The First Year Street Team has a couple of things rolled up their sleeve designed specifically for first-year students. Be sure to check out the MUS website often to find out what...

Student Right of the Week

Posted by Matthew Reid on Mon, 01/23/2012 - 01:31

Hi everyone!

This week's right of the week reads as follows:

"Every student has a right to be free from a reprisal or threat of reprisal for the rejection of a sexual soli- citation or advance where the reprisal is made or threatened by a person in a position to offer or deny to the student an academic advantage or any opportunity pertaining to the status of student." - McGill Charter of Student Rights

This particular right is pretty straightforward. If a professor or anyone else in a position to advance you, academically or otherwise, threatens to hurt you if you do not acquiest to their requests, you have a right to deny that person and approach the proper authorities for assistance. Though universities are normally places of strict honour and academic integrity, there have been (and probably always will be) the select few cases where such a situation between a student and a university employee has arisen. This is why students need to be vigilant about protecting themselves by avoiding such situations entirely and knowing that if such a situation is forced upon them, they have reprisal.

Monthly External Update

Posted by Gaziza Tolkimbayeva on Mon, 01/23/2012 - 00:50

Hello lovely Bronfmanites!

I hope everyone enjoyed Carnival, props to my fellow exec Marie Louise and the co-chairs for a great event! Quick update on what's hot right now in the External portfolio:

1) JDC 2012 was beyond great. Our delegation came back with 7 podiums, finished 3rd in Academics and paid off for all the efforts the competition committee has been putting in JDC since this summer! This continues our good performance in competitions this year, as our HR Sympo finished 4th overall and brought back 2 podiums earlier this year.

2) Financial Open is coming up in 2 weeks! McGill is readier then ever, let's wish our delegation the best of luck, some of our brightest Accounting & Finance students will be representing Desautels at the 6th edition of Financial Open held at JMSB.

3) Another event under external portfolio has succesfuly passed this weekend, the Desautels Business Conference on Sustainability! Co-chairs Anne & Dylan and their entire committee did an amazing job this year, especially by bringing in Craig Kielburger as a keynote speaker.

4) The upcoming weeks are pretty hectic for me: Thursday I will be leaving on the ski trip organized by the MUS Accounting Society (external love towards our clubs!) and then I will be heading directly to REFAEC, held in Trois Rivieres this weekend. We will finally find out the sports that will be played at Happening Marketing 2012, held at JMSB in March so I'll keep you posted on...

Fall 2011 Recap: President

Posted by Dave Fortin on Tue, 12/27/2011 - 01:00

The Management Undergraduate Society had a fairly eventful fall semester. There was Frosh, AVICII, GCC, U2CC, Mass Tutorials, 4a7, HR Symposium, Hype Week, CASCO and many more successful events.

Perhaps the biggest news from the end of this semester is that the MUNACA strike is over. This should mean fewer disruptions on campus and improved student services in the second half of the year.

The Survey Task Force, a new MUS initiative this year, provided valuable information for our events and operations. In the fall semester, surveys were created for 4a7, Course Evaluations, Mass Tutorials, Dave’s Store, and Sinfully Asian. Results and analysis can be found at in the Surveys section of the site (see the bottom of this post for link).

We have also made efforts to improve the first year experience by introducing the Street Team, a group of first year students who promote MUS events and involvement opportunities to their classmates. They also act as our First Year Council, which gives us valuable feedback on how everything from Frosh to first year courses can be improved.

The opening of the Business Intelligence Centre on the second floor of the Bronfman building will provide much needed space for our students in the winter semester. It will contain many discussion rooms, extra tables in open study space and large area for quiet study. The MUS is truly excited for the unveiling ceremony on January 18th and to move into our new office in room 228...
